sampling the era

i came across this new york times cover that i art directed in june, 1973 when it looked like the 27th amendment could pass. i thought i was being ironic designing this old-fashioned sampler. but the sampler turned out to be a literal symbol of the old-fashioned thinking and fear of the new that defeated the equal rights amendment.
